Gianluigi Aponte has officially transferred ownership of his shipping empire MSC to his children. With this comes a new chapter in the history of the world's largest container shipping company. The 85-year-old founder does remain involved as chairman of the board of directors.
With this move, the leadership comes fully into the hands of the next generation. Son Diego Aponte has been CEO since 2014, while daughter Alexa Aponte Vago holds the role of CFO. The family thus remains firmly at the helm of the group.
Gianluigi Aponte started with his first container ship in 1969, laying the foundation for what is now a global logistics empire. A year later, the name Mediterranean Shipping Company was introduced, better known as MSC.
Today, MSC has grown into the world's largest container shipping company, with a fleet approaching the 1,000 container ships mark. Currently, the shipping company has 992 ships, representing a capacity of 7.26 million teu.
MSC's growth has been impressive. Just a few years ago, in 2022, the shipping company took over the lead from Maersk. Since then, the lead has only continued to grow.
MSC started with one ship and is now responsible for more than 20 per cent of global container capacity.
According to Gianluigi Aponte, the transfer is a logical step. With his children at the helm, he expects the company to continue to grow and innovate. The family culture will remain an important part of the strategy.
Besides the container business, the family also plays a role in other parts of the group. For example, Pierfrancesco Vago, Alexa's husband, heads MSC's cruise operations.
The transition to the next generation comes at a time when the industry is in a state of flux. Geopolitical tensions, changing trade flows and technological developments require strong leadership and strategic choices.
For the logistics sector, MSC remains a defining player. The shipping company's scale and influence make it crucial in international transport flows. Read more about container transport on the sea freight page.
With the transfer of ownership, MSC looks set for a new phase, with the next generation building on the foundation laid by Gianluigi Aponte over 50 years.
