Evergreen confirms attack on container ship

Evergreen has confirmed that a container ship in the Strait of Hormuz was struck by an unknown object. According to the Taiwanese shipping company, the crew, the cargo and the ship are safe.

The confirmation follows reports that a vessel came under fire on Thursday in the vital waterway off the Iranian coast. US media reported that it may have been an Iranian drone attack on an Evergreen Marine vessel.

Evergreen reports damage to vessel

Evergreen itself does not refer to an Iranian drone attack, but does confirm that the vessel sustained damage following an impact. Among other things, windows on the bridge and other parts of the vessel were damaged.

According to the shipping company, the main engine and all navigation equipment continued to function normally. Nor were there any problems that jeopardised the container ship’s seaworthiness.

Evergreen incident heightens uncertainty in Hormuz

The incident comes at a sensitive time for international shipping. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime channels and has been subject to heightened tension for months due to the situation surrounding Iran.

Iran had previously warned that ships must coordinate their passage through the Strait of Hormuz with the Revolutionary Guard. For shipping lines, shippers and freight forwarders, this means that whilst the route may once again be operationally accessible, it is not yet without risks.

Further information on international container flows can be found on the pages covering sea freight, container handling and road transport.

Evergreen keeps vessel seaworthy

The fact that, according to Evergreen, the vessel remained seaworthy is important for the further handling of the voyage. When engines, navigation systems or safety equipment fail, an incident can immediately lead to prolonged delays, salvage costs or diversion to a port of refuge.

For customers in the logistics chain, however, the incident remains relevant. Even minor damage can have consequences for planning, insurance, safety checks and communication with the parties involved. In a tense area such as the Strait of Hormuz, every disruption carries significant weight.
