India launches its first special salt container train

India has put its first specialised container train for salt transport into service. The train departed on 15 September from Shivlakha in Gujarat bound for Mithapur and uses newly designed, stainless-steel containers.
A different container for a challenging product
Salt poses specific challenges for transport. It attracts moisture and can therefore be more difficult to load, unload and transport. According to Indian Railways, the new containers are lightweight, can be loaded from the top and unloaded from the side.
In doing so, Indian Railways is opting for a different approach to transport in traditional wagons. The first commercial journey departed from the Gati Shakti Cargo Terminal in Shivlakha, in the Bhuj region, bound for Mithapur.
Rail as a link in bulk logistics
Gujarat, and particularly the Kachchh region, is a major salt-producing area. With this specially developed container, the railway company aims to organise transport to other parts of India more efficiently. The launch marks the commercial deployment of this new type of rolling stock.
For shippers, this development demonstrates how rail systems can adapt to the characteristics of a specific product group. It is not only the route, but also the loading and unloading methods that determine the suitability of rail for bulk transport.
