ZIM shareholders vote overwhelmingly in favour of the takeover
ZIM shareholders have overwhelmingly approved the takeover by Hapag-Lloyd. This cleared an important hurdle in the completion of the deal, which is worth $4.2 billion. Over 97 per cent of shareholders agreed to the offer of $35 per share.
The takeover marks an important development in the container sector, in which consolidation and economies of scale are increasingly common. For Hapag-Lloyd, it represents a further expansion of its position in global shipping.
ZIM shareholders give green light
With the approval of ZIM shareholders, the deal is a step closer, but not yet fully completed. The acquisition still needs to be approved by Israeli authorities.
An important part of the deal is that not all operations will be taken over. Certain parts will go to investment company Fimi, so that Israel retains control over strategic logistics functions.
This construction shows how geopolitical interests continue to play a role in international acquisitions within the logistics sector.

ZIM shareholders agree, but concerns remain
Despite widespread support among ZIM shareholders, there are still concerns within the company. Some staff previously laid off work to get more clarity on the impact of the takeover on their position.
Talks are currently taking place between unions, Hapag-Lloyd, ZIM and Fimi to address these concerns. The outcome of these negotiations may affect the further course of the takeover.
In addition, the deal has been criticised in Israel. Some parties are concerned about foreign influences, as Hapag-Lloyd is partly owned by investors from countries with which Israel does not have a strong relationship.
For the logistics sector, this acquisition is a clear signal that the market continues to move. Larger players are looking for scale and efficiency to remain competitive. Read more about container transport on the ocean freight page.
In the coming period, it will become clear whether the takeover is finally approved and what the impact will be on international shipping and logistics.
