Customs officers arrested as part of an investigation into port crime
Customs officers have been arrested in a major investigation into undermining crime in the port of Rotterdam. The Combiteam Havens arrested four suspects, including three Customs employees. They are suspected of computer hacking and violating their official secrecy, among other things.
The arrests took place after a lengthy investigation into the role of insiders within port logistics. According to the justice department, they involve a 41-year-old man from Capelle aan den IJssel and three men from Rotterdam aged 45, 36 and 25.
Customs officers suspected of misusing systems
The suspects are accused of abusing their access to sensitive systems and information. This kind of insider crime poses a major risk to the security and reliability of logistics processes at the port.
The detained customs officers are currently under full restrictions. This means they are only allowed to have contact with their lawyer. As a result, the prosecution is releasing only limited information about the case for the time being.
The investigation focuses on possible involvement in organised crime, using in-house knowledge to facilitate illegal activities.
