Diesel prices soar in record rise
Diesel prices rose sharply in the Netherlands in a short time due to the ongoing tensions in the Middle East. More than 10 cents per litre was added in a single day, taking the price to an all-time high. For transport and logistics, this immediately means higher costs and additional pressure on margins.
According to UnitedConsumers figures, the national recommended price for diesel is now around 2.793 euros per litre. Just a day earlier, it was 2.688 euros. Major oil companies raised their prices even more sharply, with increases of up to 12 cents per litre.
Diesel price rises faster than petrol
Interestingly, the diesel price is rising much faster than the petrol price. Whereas diesel is increasing by double digits, Euro95's rise remains limited to a few cents. Yet petrol prices too are now reaching record highs.
The reason lies in developments in the international energy market. The price of diesel on the European market has risen above $200 a barrel, a level not seen since 2022. The price of crude oil has also soared and is now above $110 a barrel.
Did you know?
Diesel prices are directly linked to international oil prices, making geopolitical tensions almost immediately visible at the pump.
Diesel price under pressure due to geopolitical tensions
The rise in diesel prices is directly linked to the situation around Iran and the Strait of Hormuz. With the threat of disruptions in oil supply, markets are reacting nervously, leading to higher prices worldwide.
Statements by US President Donald Trump about possible actions against Iran have further fuelled uncertainty. This increases the likelihood of disruptions in oil trade, which translates directly into higher fuel prices.
For the transport sector, this has major implications. Companies see their costs rising rapidly and ultimately have to pass them on to customers. This causes higher rates in almost all forms of transport.
For logistics companies, it is therefore essential to remain flexible and monitor cost developments closely. You can read more about how transport costs are structured on the page about diesel surcharge.
Diesel prices are expected to remain volatile for the time being as long as geopolitical tensions persist. As a result, fuel will remain one of the main factors determining costs in logistics.
